Default heater fan issue

i checked with a volt meter at my fuse and at the fan. the fan is not turning on for heat or a/c. i checked the red wire running into the relay, and i was getting a good reading (somewhere around 12.8V running) i forgot to check the purple wire running to the fan motor. however, i took off both leads to the fan and ran the purple to the positive and the balck to a ground, but the fan didnt turn on. is the relay required to turn the fan on? i would think that, unless the fan is faulty, it should turn on. has anyone ever experienced this before? im planning on going to a junkyard to get a few relays to test it out. i might take the entire fan, but i think it will be hard to remove

The fan should turn if it is wired directly to the battery. If it does not turn, the fan motor is dead or the connecting wires are bad.

When you checked the relay wire, did you ground on a common ground or right past the relay? As far as taking the fan out, not as hard as you might think, should be able to do it in 30 minutes, easily.

i found out the problem, the motor is dead. the brushes and commutator are so worn out. i bought a used one off ebay though for the time being. right now, i have a fan in the hole where it mounted, but it doesnt push any air in (but it is directioned properly). but the fan was a huge pain to get out. is there any way to easily access the bottom two screws? the one took me 5 minutes to remove with a wrench, and the other one broke off.

either remove the fender splash sheild or use 2, 1/4" drive union joints and a long extension and pray to Dale Earnhart Junior. as far as getting them back in, good luck or leave them out like i do.
