Default header clearnce issues

so i was informed that i cant put a set of long tube headers on my 89 5.0L camaro cuz of clearnce issues and i have never heard of not being able to not just swap them and the y pipe out...
so my question is this possible to have them?
and has anyone had problems with this?

You can install long tube headers, but beware you will have ground clearance problems.

I have hedman long tubes on mine but they dont bolt right up to your y pipe. if you use 2 1/2" pipe you can run a new y pipe without huge clearance issues.

ok but when you say clearnce issuse is it with the hedder hanging to low?
or with the piping underneath
because i already have 3 inch all the way back from the cat and over the rear end.

i had my eye on a set of hedmen, are they any good?

your headers wont hit but the the piping might, I dont think you will have too much trouble with 3", just the occasional scrape. you could also go with some 3" oval piping for the y pipe to the exhaust canal. then you may not have any at all. I will try to take a pic or two tomorrow of where the headers come out and line up (they go back a bit farther) so you know before you buy. Just dont laugh at the crappy job someone did to my exhaust.
I like the hedmans myself but it is also the only set of headers I owned.

dont do it unless you can fab up your own exhaust and dont go bigger than 2 1/2" pipes.

i used hedman long tubes and i had to bend the crap out of them and heat them up to bend them more. then i had to jack up my motor and take my dip stick out, and take off my starter. its too much hassle unless you really want your car to be loud as hell. i used 2 1/4" pipes and fabed up some hangers that couldnt possibly go any higher than this and i would scrape and bottom out every time i went for a ride. and i also had 2 1/2" spring lifters in it too. i used to replace exhaust clamps every week cuz they would grind off. it would be cool at night cuz it would throw some sick sparksand it was the best sounding car in my town. but its a pain unless you run the dual pipes through the stock exhaust location. so you'll have to bend and weld a lot to get the ground clearance you want.

I didnt get a chance to take pictures but I will try tonight. The headers themselves dont hang any farther than the transmission fluid pan if I remember correctly. When I installed mine it was on a brand new motor so I didnt have many problems installing. I had to buy a smaller starter so it would fit around the header but didnt have to heat up or bend anything. Here is a site with pictures for exhaust routing Ideas. http://fbody.beater.org/ it is pretty much only for duals.
