Well i finally diagnosed my motor to have a BAD rod knock and is about the blow any second. I am picking up a 350 small block 4 bolt Monday morning about an hour 1/2 from me. So I need to pull my motor out and get ready to swap my heads, cam, headers, intake, etc etc. I have never pulled a motor before but I am confident I can do it!! I have a nice hoist and all the right tools but was just wondering the best way to attack it. Does anyone know of a write up on engine removal for a 3rd gen?


Any tricks that I should know? BTW I am having the motor put in by the shop I work at so I don't screw it up.

Best thing to do is mark every wire and sensor before you start pulling thing apart. This is the best advice, because most people can't remember were everything went.

Yes I agree... I usually will wrap a piece of tape around each side of a wire and label them 1 and 1 and so on. Just wondering if there are any tricks of the trade

Well I couldn't get the tranny seperated so I pulled it out in one shot. Took 5 hours working outside in 20 degree weather in a carport. Pretty damn good if you ask me!!!

Pics anyone?? The crank looks to be in great shape to me. I am tearing it down to find out what was wrong. Hopefully I find some disaster in there so I can understand what was making soooo much noise. Maybe I can salvage this block and build it up.

Hey Kyle I gotta ask. Did you remove the oil pan while that was on just the engine hoist? Man you got ***** bro!

Hey man. I am rebuilding a 350 to swap out my 305, so I am kinda in the same boat as you. Its a fun project, especially as a first timer. If your looking for a good book I am using this one http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Reb...2494211/?itm=1 . I am very happy with it so far. I have yet to read much into the actual book itself just because I have done enough research to already know how to tear it apart but the DVD on there is excellent. It shows you how to take apart everything, what the machine shops do when you take it in, pre-assembly to make sure everything should run smoothly and the final assembly process. Right now I have the engine down to the core with the crank and cam shaft still in. If you have any questions just send me a PM or something. Good luck with your project man!

I dont plan on building this motor because there is some UNKOWN knock coming from it. Im tearing it down and so far I haven't found anything wrong.. I am buying a 77 350 4 bolt for $300 and Im gonna build that up. This motor is a 2 bolt.

Sewerrat-I removed the oil pan insde the car... This project started out me pulling the oil pan to inspect the crank for anything obvious and ended up pulling the motor. I am however dissasembling most of the motor right on the hoist. Whats wrong with that!! LOL

well since you pulled the tranny with it, i was gonna say when i pulled my motor out to get it back in, i had to take off the engine mouting brackets on the bottom of the block. sounds weird huh? mines an 85. my friend had a 90 rs and we had to do the same on his. the tranny didnt line up cuz the mounts were hitting each other and not letting me go further. heres a pic.

just a heads up you might not run into this problem but if you do its just another 20 minutes of your time.
