Fuseable Link?
Hey it's been like a year since ive been on here. My Camaro has been out of commision all summer. Finally get it running, new steering column, brakes, springs, etc. Took it for a test drive after installing the steering column. About 5 minuts into the drive my tach starts getting jumpy. At the next light I go and when i shift into 2nd gear there was a loud pop (sounded like exhaust backfire). A little smoke came from the engine bay around the power brakes booster on the drivers side. Car is dead, electric and all. Guy who towed it said may be a fuseable link. How would I be able to tell whats wrong and how hard is it to replace a fuseable link? Any help appreciated.
Thanks, Bill

Well I think the only place the links are located are by the battery and starter. All the fusalbe link is, a wire that will melt away ( a fuse) and a butt splicer to normal wire. When you check them if they look good give a little tug on them. Some times they will burn or corode on the inside of the plastic connector and look good.
Yes, I had the fusable link burn out on my 69 Impala once.
As I recall, it was located by the battery, as Mad Mike noted. A wiring diagram of you car will show it.
It's easy to replace, but that fuseable link burned out for a reason. You have an electrical problem that needs to be found and fixed, or the fuse will simplyblow again.

Just fixed the same thing on my 83 camaro, turns out there was a wire shorting against the firewall of the engine compartment...not sure what the wire went to...but after i removed it i just taped the end, and that stopped that fusable links from blowing...but again, not sure what the wire goes to, everything seems to be working properly
