engine swap

for $1500, you could get the 350 engine, 700r4 trans, ecm, and complete wiring harness for a mid 90's vortec setup from a suburban. everything should work with the factory gauges as well, maybe just some cutting a splicing near the connectors, but it wouldnt be hard. it would be even simpler with aftermarket gauges. there is a section on whats needed for the swap in the sticky

I would factor in a bit more than that. There are too many variables involved. Mounts, belts, fluids, splices/wires all add up quick. That and the whole not knowing the internal condition of the used parts you just plunked $1500 on. I've said this a lot and its not that I'm made of money, because I'm not, but in the end you will get what you pay for.

most junkyards offer at least a 30 day warrenty on engine parts and transmissions. be smart about it. check the oil on the engine, make sure its black at least. do a compression test, and run it to check for noise. check the fluid color of the trans. you could probably have one put on hold when it comes in that its still running before you buy it

With current prices on "project cars" you may want to watch your area for failed projects. If the motor is done and the body is a mess you can get great deals. If the car is drivable you can test drive it and buying a doner car is one way to be sure you have all the needed parts. These projects tend $40 you right out of you budget. I have seen many project cars sell for less then the drive line is worth.
