I might be buying a 3rd gen Camaro tomorrow night. The motor thats in it now is a 305 with a spun crank bearing. I was planning on buying a cheap 4 bolt 350 that needs to be rebuilt. My brother and I are going to be doing all the labor of pulling out the 305 and dropping in the carbed 350 we just need the shop to do the actual rebuild. I was just wondering how many horse am I looking at getting out of this motor if I can put $2000 into the motor and labor work alone? I know thats a pretty vague description but I would like to have a completly forged motor with a good cam is this possible?

 

nope. all forged internals alone will be about 1200 bucks. About as cheap as ive ever seen a used 350 4 bolt, even just the block is about 200 bucks. So your already at 1400 roughly. A decent carb is another 4. So 1800 bucks later you have a few parts but not all of it. Not to mention the labor to build the carb

 

I built my motor that is a mild street build, but is enough to pin you in your seat, for $850, BUT, I got the engine, the intake, and a few other things for free, I just had to work it off and I built it myself.

 

really. i'm just wondering what kind of parts to buy. i know i want a roller comp cam. i know i want a holly 4 barrel carb but what would be a good cfm to go with for a 350 bored 30 over? i'd like to have somewhere near a 300hp motor when it's all said and done but will $2000 be enough to do that?

 

Go to www.promarengine.com and talk to Brian. He is a nice guy, and they sell engine tech rebuild kits. They have a kit for a 350 that I bought, that is COMPLETE, pistons, cam, timing set, seals/gaskets, oil pump, bearings, etc. You can upgrade the cam, timing set, pistons, and the timing set, the kit starts at $300 and goes up as you add parts. I added a high volume oil pump, stage 1 cam, and a double roller timing set. Since you aren't going for huge power, the forged aluminum pistons that come with it are fine, but you can upgrade if you want.

You can also look them up on ebay, something like promarengine.

 

I suggest you buy a book called How to build Horse Power for a Small block Chevy Engine written by David Visard.
Great read, you should be able to build a 300+ Hp engine on your budget easy if you do a little shoppping around for parts. Just don't be in a big hurry. You'd be suprised what you can find on the flycheap if you just use the internet.
