A/C not working....
I think there might be a leak in my 92rs cuz I had it filled with R-12/R-22... whatever it uses last summer and it was gone by end of summer. Has anyone converted to 134a and it worked out for them cuz I heard that freon sucks
First off, whoever told you that Freon sucks has no idea what they're talking about. You're actually better off leaving it an R-12 system (it's not actually Freon unless it's made by Dupont) The R-12 is made of larger molecules than 134-A, uses a lower head pressure to produce equivalent or better cooling capacity, and resultantly is much less likely to leak out than 134-A.Best bet would be to get some leak detector in there, and replace the part at fault. Be sure to add oil to the system in accordance with how much is taken out with the old part. It should tell you with the included paper if bought new, or you could probably find it in a service manual for the AC system if bought used. If the part at fault is the reciever/dryer, you'll have to replace it with new, as the desacant bag in a used on will be useless, and defeat the secondary purpose of that part, which is keeping water from freezing up the system. You'll also want to be sure to have a shop vacuum the system for a minimum of 30 minutes after you close it back up. This will ensure that any non-condensible gas (read air) is gone from the system before recharging. If you DO decide to retrofit after the repair, remember that the required amount of 134-A is about half that of the R-12 by weight. It should also be noted that 134-A is ALOT more tempermental than its predecessor. If you overcharge with the 134-A by more than a few ounces, and your pressure blowoff doesn't work properly (which is pretty likely at this age) you could be looking at compressor hydrolock, and a much pricier repair. With the R-12, over charging will just mean you've got more refrigerant, as long as you've not overcharged by ridiculous amounts.Whatever you choose though, if you need more help, lemme know, I'd be glad to offer whatever I can.
The 134 works well and it is still cheaper than R12. Chances are your compressor is leaking. You can look around it and the rest of the system and look for moisture and moiste dirt around the body of the compressor, near the clutch/pully and all the fittings.
If you do decide to go with 134A, evacuate and recharge it to the specified amount that the system held before. I have done many this way including my own Camaro. That chargeing to 1/2 (I heard 75% in the beging) is a myth. You can get a retro kit with a switch to shut it off if the pressure gets to high.
