ball joint and spring quick questions.
86 Z28 5.0 fuel injected, originally.
I am going to be replacing my ball joint soon and want to know how difficult it will be. The main reason I want to know Is so I can figure out how long it will take and that way I can plan my day accordingly. also is a ball joint removal/press tool necessary or can I get by without it? If I have to get one no big deal but I would rather not. one more ball joint question, do these require the separator fork? It didnt mention one in my Haynes manual.
On a completely different note, while I was inspecting my rotors I saw that my passenger side suspension spring was busted off at the bottom (looked like the last 3 or 4 inches of spring) I was wondering the difficulty of this operation. I know the tools I need (spring compressor and such) and dangerous it could be. I am just wondering if it will be hard to do or if I should just pay someone. Money is a factor also. I wont pay someone 500 for something I can do for 100.

Just remenber those ball joints are pressed in and have 20+ years of rust. I would recommend the ball joint removal tool. Recently replaced my 1987 cars ball joints (rusted in place) and all the steering parts (all original). Never replaced the springs, but it could be dangerous if you don't know what you are doing & don't have the right tools. your choice on this one. Good luck
thanks black, I will go ahead and loan-a-tool the removal tool then. also did you need balljoint fork or would the removal tool be it? when I looked at it, it said that it was for removing and pressing it in.
The fork would be helpful in removing the tie rods. But plan on this being a ll day job unless you get lucky and that never happens working on a 3rd gen car. Just a suggestion, check what else may need replacing while everything is apart. Time to look at the steering parts if the ball joints are shot.
