Default Bad Battery?

Today while its 37 degrees and snow is falling my 1984 camaro(auto, z28 140,000mi) wouldn't start initially. I didn't want to flood the engine so I gave up for a while. Then I jumped it and it started instantly. I know that I didn't kill my battery the night before so maybe I didn't give it enough gas.

When I tried to drive away I got 100 feet and make a left turn the car died mid turn in the middle of a street. I'm not sure if the problems are related but, I really want to know why it died. Then I let it rest for 5 minutes, and it turned on and worked normally, and i put it back in my driveway.

P.S. it smells like gas or burning oil inside the car a bit, and especially out.

Batteries dont like cold weather. While 37 is by no means cold, it may be enough to hinder a weak battery. How old is the battery? (Look for the date code sticker on the side, letter and number, letter represents month, number=year. so D2 would be April 2002) Why did you stall? My bet is that your car is carbed, she wasnt warmed up enough and the choke hadnt fully opened. She got flooded as you accellerated thru the turn and stalled. You let it sit, the gas evaporated, she fired up again.

Check your battery, clean off your choke, let her warm up in the morning and you will be fine.

(Even new cars act funny up here when it gets into the minus ten degree range....)

I used to have the same troubles once when it got cold out. Here is a weird suggestion. turn your lights on for a few minutes to warm the battery then try to start it. I used to do it in a pinch and it would work fine. if you have the money I would suggest buying a battery with plenty of cold cranking amps.

they pretty much said it. i dont know too much about cold weather (i live in florida) but i do know that bats lose power when the temp drops. if you had a weak bat to start with it might not be able to give you the supposed magical 11.8 to crank. once the car is started, it shouldnt die if it has a bad battery. a running car uses the alternator to run. so if it was a juice problem that killed the car it could be alternator related. more likely tho it is simply a prob of not being warmed up enough, and when you took the turn the bowls filled too much to burn and flooded and stalled it. good luck
