i would like to add one to my car. the brakes are sometimes very hard to push, other times theres sufficient vacuum to assist. hvac is holding up on its own. how would i route the hose to do it? does it go from the manifold to the reservoir, then the booster?

Yep, that's about it. My C3 Vette came with a vacuum reservoir from the factory, there's a load of vacuum driven stuff on that car. You could also put an in-line check valve on both sides of the tank, which will retain the vacuum for a while. The vacuum will bleed off once the car sits for a while though.

Hop on ebay and search vacuum reservoir. There's anything from factory plastic or coffee can styles, up to fancy polished aftermarket ones. Somewhere in the $30 range will get you a pretty one, or go cheaper with a plain-jane one if it's gonna get buried.
