Question 89 rs vats

Hi all,

Thanks up front for any help, I purchased a 1989 RS with 305 as a project car for my daughter and I. it has been sitting since mid 04 the battery was dead and of course no keys. Its VATs equiped and I did my homework. Thanks to this site. I purchased and created all the 15 resistor combinations, verified tolerences, cliped wires and have inserted a non vats key cylinder in column and have a new battery. I tested all the combinations waiting the required 5 minute interval between each.

My issue is the security light is constant when I turn the key to start. I hear fuel pump engage and see gauges react on all the combinations. I do not ever get an atempt to crank.

My question is what else can I possibly be doing wrong or missing? Can VATS lose its memory after such a long time with no power? Any ideas on what else i may need to check.

Thanks again...Eric

i have one that i keep just in case. the thing is u need to know the key code. without knowing that the thing is no good. im wondering if its in the wireing. u check all the fuses by the driver door and under the hood. the theft deterrant modual may be bad. have u got a dealer service manual for your yr and model. they are much better than chiltons or such.

Camaro69 I think I need the proper code to get bypass module which i belive is the same as the resistors.

Craby I will check fuses and I gather the theft deterant module is the actual VATS box.

I have used the vats bypass module. Bit of a pain to wire in because the previous owner bastardized the ignition a bit, but works well. I still get a security light with the wrong key in it, but it always starts even with the light lit.

Cheap and effective, works well.

The bypass module replicates a VATS system. It does not replace the resistor, because the resistor does not send the signal to the ECM. The bypass module just constantly sends the signal to the ECM if it's looking for it. An alternative option is to buy a PROM with vats disabled and you will have the same effect. In fact I could tear out the vats system and this box would keep my comp thinking it's happily VATs'd up.

You do need to know your ECM model however to match it up. However, 89's did not come with that many different ones.
