Default 89 camaro RS not turning over??

OK guys I did search.. have all over the place... and I cant see how to remove the housing so I can even get to the wheel nut so I can get my puller on there... I need to replace the ignition lock... First off at least this one does have the VATS key system in it... bleh... hehe it will be bypassed permanantly... (I no longer have the vats key... and dealer cut new keys but unless I bring the car to them sto read the system to get the resistance...... etc....) anyway going to bypass it but I need to be able to turn the key and currently I cant.. and I can tell the cylinder is bad as I can see at least one of the springs down in the lock part...... I have a new cyl on order with key but I want to go ahead and disassemble it... But I cant see how to get the wheel off... any help would be greatly appriciated.... I have done this before but not on a camaro....

Any help would be grately welcomed....

Thanks

William

Just pull the horn button off and there is a clip to pry off and then remove the nut. If it was an air bag wheel then there a screws through the back to get the air bag off then the wheel comes off the same way.

Should just pull. Carefuly! There is a wire atached that goes deeper into the wheel that twist into the horn ring and the tab that holds that inwill break easily then the spring loaded wire wont stay in. But if memory serves all there is are fingers on the back of the button that snap into the hole in the wheel.

OK guys removed the steering wheel and the locking plate etc... I have the key cyl out and this does indeed have a VATS system.... I have anew non-VATS key and cyl coming in tomorrow... wanted to try and see if I could get the car to turn over (this car was just recently purchased with no keys so I have not been able to try and even start it...) So with the key cyl out I reached in with pliers and turned the switch everything worked fine turns easily but the starter will not enguage not even turn over at all.. Like no power going to the starter... I have a couple questions... Will the VATS in this model also disable the starter relay? and if so how do I bypass that??? If not... what could it be? The guy said he thought it might be the neutral safety switch ( this is a manual trans ) the switch is on the clutch but im not 100% sure that is the only place.... Is there one on the shifter? OK im old school and havent had a chevy since my 1972 Monte Carlo... which in that case I would crawl under the car cross out the solenoid and see if it will start and go from there.....

Any Ideas?

Thanks

William

the only safety switch is on the clutch pedal. i took mine out all together and jumped it. I kept goin through them, then one broke while i was at work. i shoved my hand up there, and broke it to a zillion pieces on accident. I managed to fix it well enough to get home and fix it there. But i didnt want that to happen again. just gotta make sure that clutch is either in or the tranny is in neutral

Thanks.... Im going to bypass it likely in the next couple days... The new key cyl should be in tomorrow... then I need to get resistors as I have no idea what the resistance of the key use to be... but hey its only 15 different ones shouldnt take too long to figure it out....

Thanks again.

I replaced the key cyl with a non-vats key cyl...I still have to figure out what the resister code it.....havent had time.... lately been traveling and such... but I did have a little time to work on it and the new Key cyl works great... However it will not crank over... I had a set of jumper cables on it and nothing...... I removed the right front wheel jumped the sylanoid (sp) and it will spin over but weakly..... I dont think there was enough juice through the cables to do so.... will be getting a new battery shortly....... (getting warmer now so I dont mind getting out and working on it.....) I have a question about the VATS.... I realize it will not run without the proper resistance in there.... But I should be able to start it briefly right? or do I need to have a resistor in there?

According to the guy I bought the car from it was runnign he shut the car off and then it would not start again.... Any ideas what to check first? a few step by step line items to look at?

Thanks.

William

OK vats been there done that.Without the resistor pelet the car should do nothing. As in turn key and the brain says no.No turning over or anything.I'll check my flash drives this weekend and try to dig up my list of key pelets.(think theres actually 7 of em)This should speed up the process for ya a bit. What I did was raid a bone yard and cut the plug in for the 2 wires that run up to the contact reeds in the cylynder.Cut and stripped the wires on the key side and then soldered the correct combination of resistors to the wires.I then covered with heatshrink to protect them and plugged it into the same under my column.
Replaced the key cylynder with one of the MANY spares in the shed and she fired right up.

Oh yea BECAREFUL.In my eagerness to figure it out myself I fried the brain box for both the VATS and the car itself.Jumpering wires and sendin currant where it was not supposed to go.Gawd what a mess.
