Default 87 camaro 302?

Well, I am new here. I dont have a camaro yet. I currently drive a modified 04 Mustang. I am looking at getting a 87 camaro 302 from my buddy. It has a new 302 in it with alot of money put in it. Is this a good car? Good platform? I have done some searching and got mixed answers on all of this. What can I expect in the quarter time? And would it take alot to eventualy drop a 350 or a ls1 in it? Thanks, and I look forward to joining you guy in the camaro world if the car is right.

302? As in old school chevy, or a ford 302? Welcome to the forums, check the stickies on swaps, most if not all of your questions should be answered.

The 302 was a first gen Z/28 engine. Your vintage car came with a 305. You're sure numbers aren't getting mixed up?

easy swap, just change the block. Everything will bolt up.

I would guess it will run in the 17's if it is stock and tired.
But that is a wild guess. You haven't given any details.
The motor is only on of many things that effect times.

It can be a fun car to drive and will seem fast around town.

If you are driving a worked 04 Mustang, a 87 with a 305 will make you loose all faith in Camaro's. Heres why I say it.....305's are very rarely 'worked', usually nothing more than a carb/exhaust upgrade and MAYBE a cam. That mustang will trounce the Camaro. Camaro's are large, heavy cars and really need a 350 before they get exciting. Dont get excited about a 305......if the car is in nice shape, go for it, you can always upgrade engines later, but you will want to upgrade.

camaro, heavy? my car weighed 3380 with a half tank of gas, no spare, and 2 sub woofers. the new mustangs and camaro is heavy. my car, when stock, ran 15.2 every pass. 305 tpi with 2.73 posi. later found out when it came apart that some of my valves were badly in need of adjustment

Shuuuut up. Damit micro, why you always gotta bust my chops! 8*p

Either way...the 04 Mustang V6 BASE has the same HP as the 87 Camaro 305. I think this guy will be very disappointed in a base 305..or even a mildly worked one.
