Default 86 Trans Am, Project Thread

Got a new project Today.
This one is going to be built for the wife.

Actually, seems to drive good. Tranny is solid, but motor is tired. Smokes a lot.
Was told it is the original 305. Owner thought it was rebuilt a few years ago.
I don't think so. Car only has 100k miles.

Needs a lot of work... but I guess that is the fun.
I don't see any rust or any bondo. Car seems really solid.
T's don't leak or it has been kept under a cover.

Should I junk the 305 and get a 350?
Will the computer run a 350? I know the fuel injection
will with an aftermarket computer. I am wondering if the stock computer will.

I already have the 78 Z that is a race car. I am thinking about leaving the 305.
Not sure, better gas mileage may be nice. I just hate going with a smaller engine.

Anyone know anything about the heads on these? Like the CC's.
Wondering what the compression would be if I used these heads on a 350 block.

I have a 92 RS and I bought a long block 350 from Kragen Auto for a 92 Z and didn't change anything else on the car. Mine is TBI but runs good and my friend is driving it right now and says he's getting 24-25 mpg on freeway. Car has been running since beginning of 05 with that engine. Not bad for a $900 engine when I bought it, for an extra $100 I got a 3 year unlimited mile warranty that never got used.

Got the temp tag today. Tried emissions and it failed.
Needs a new cat and probably a head job.

Haven't checked if the air injection system is working or not. Didn't know what the heck it was till they told me. I saw the strange tubing when looking at the car and guess it was something like air injection. Just never heard the term.

Unfortunately, the vin says it has air injection so I can remove it.

Kid, I got it from said it had a new bottom end. It smokes like crazy on start up and hi rpms. To me that means rings. Is there any way to test if it is rings or just valve guides.

a cylinder leak down test will determine if its rings or valves. but generally when it smokes is a good indication. if it constantly smokes, rings. if it smokes on start up, valve seals. if it smokes light throttle, idle, and driving, it needs rebuilt. you can swap to a 350 block if you would like. the bare minimum parts if running a stock 350 with stock manifold is the 350 prom chip, 350 knock sensor, and 22lb injectors. if you are looking for more power and plan on adding headers during the swap, or more work down the line, i suggest a custom tune from PCMforless.com its what i run in my car. the stock 305 heads are either 55cc or 58cc. they will really crank up the compression on a 350, but the smaller valves wont let you use any of it for good except wasting money on a higher octane.

hmm... not sure what i want. I was hoping for a real easy swap since I will have the engine out anyway.

I don't really want to deal with replacing the injectors or a custom tune on this car. It needs to stay a daily driver for the wife.

Maybe just rebuild the 305 and a small cam.

Cant install headers cause of the stupid air injection. That has to stay for emissions.
I have three cars that wont pass. i want this one to pass.

Just fyi, you can buy headers specifically for F bodies that will allow the air injection. I bought some, because I, too, must pass emissions.

That makes me feel better. Stupid Air Injection.
You just cant do much to an engine if it cant exhale.

So they did do a visual under-hood inspection for the AIR system?
You could always make it "look" like it's hooked up. Depends on how closely they scrutinize stuff.

They got out flash lights and were looking at something rather close. But yes the defiantly looked for it. Emission report says it is there and verified.

edelbrock makes a header and y-pipe combo with the air injection into each tube and at the cat. i think its about $450 though
