86 Iroc-z 350 4bbl holley carb
i recently bought my camaro and had realized that the owner had switched it from the factory TPI to a Holley (600 i think) 4bbl Carb. I took it in and had it serviced and a couple days later the fuel pump went out. Had it replaced and since then i have had problems with it choking out. It idles fine in park and then I put it in drive and take off it has little problems for about 10-15 mins. Then it feels like its starting to choke out and then sputters a couple times and dies unless you baby the accelerator--but that only lasts for a little while. I have been told by a mechanic friend that it might need a fuel pressure regulator but i noticed from my own tinkering that when i put it into drive and accelerate the choke flap on my carb gets stuck open. I dont know much about carbs so am trying to get some kind of insight into what the problem could be. If there is anyone that can help i would greatly appreciate it

Meaning....you don't have one? Are you still running with the in-tank electric fuel pump? If so, you more than "might" need a regulator, you have to have one to keep the carb from flooding since the needle and seat won't be able to hold it back. Without a regulator, too much fuel will make the engine want to choke out, sputter, and die. Kinda like what it's doing now.

Or maybe the high pressure ruined the needle and seat, or the carb just needs to be rebuilt? Is it fairly new, or old? I would first start with a wet float level adjustment and see what you get: http://www.holley.com/data/TechServi...Carburetor.pdf

lol i didnt realize at first that you had included that link lol... only prob i have with doing a wet float level adjustment is that when it starts up and then idles its starting to die quicker and quicker. even when tweakin the throttle it still sounds lik its choking out. i have a universal regulator on it and we tried it at all the levels of pressure it has (1-5.5lbs) and still does the same thing... the carb its self is only 6months old... and the needle had gotten some debris in it so it was stuck open so had to get that fixed... possible that when that was done they didnt set it right? the day i got it back from the shop i made it maybe a mile before it started doing this and then had them tweak with it some more--even had to bring my other mechanic up there to look at it and had it running then about 2-3 miles later same problem.. started choking like it wasnt getting enough fuel or like it was getting to much... really need to get this fixed soon cause finances are gettin tight cause of all these repairs... and i really appreciate the help

Ok, follow the instructions in the link. Hopefully, your style Holley has external float adjustments. Start with the engine off, and remove the sight plugs. Gently rock the car side to side and see if any gas runs out. If gas pours out when you first removed the plug, lower the float level. If you can't see gas inside the hole with a flashlight, raise the float. If one of the floats is way off adjustment, it can make it hard to get it set while running (if that's what's causing your dying problem).

i went to try to adjust the floats this morning and there is no external float adjustments... i have the holley 600cfm 80547-8 3429... i cant even find any specs on this model... i know the original owner got the carb from oreilly's... think im just gonna have to get it rebuilt just to make sure... i think at the beginning of the year im goin to go ahead and get a complete over-haul on the engine and electronics to make sure everything is perfect cause i dont wanna have to deal with anything else goin out and causin more problems lol
