1988 camaro iroc-z convertible
First time poster....
I have a stock 1988 iroc-z convertible with a 305 auto trans I would like to upgrdae the driveline to around 600 hp. Looking for info on what to bolt in with out cutting up my car. I bought this car brand new I want to pull the stock driveline out and bolt in something more powerful.. Have not really found out any info on what to put in it. This will be a street car weekend warrior no drag car.. I will never sell this car that is why I want to keep the stock driveline to putback in if I choose..

Welcome
that sounds like an awesome idea. May i assume that you are financially ready, willing and able to begin this project? If you don't mind, how much money/credit do you have readily available to spend over the next 6 months on this? That will give us an idea on what to do.

not 600HP but double what you have. Then, $1,000 for a new exhaust, $2,500 for a rebuilt/upgraded tranny/TC and synthetic fluid, and then get a new rear end/suspension components and your money is gone.
Oh, that's assuming that you do all of the labor.
600HP....................good luck if you want a street friendly 600HP
streetable 600HP.......you could get an LS7 which is around 500HP for about $13,000 without the computer and harness
you could get an LS9 and hit your goal for around $23,000 and still need the computer and harness
The LS7/9 would also need the supporting mods but even beefier (is that a word) so your costs would go up that much more.
or, for 10k, you could go find a decent LS1 powered 4th gen, slap in a cam, CAI and long tube headers and be around 400HP and still have some jingle in your pocket.
video games and fast and furious movies are fun to watch but not reality.

first of all, for the 'vert to handle that power, you will need subframe connectors and at least a 6 point cage. there is a reason gm didnt put a 350 in them, they were too weak. with a power goal that astronomical, you will be best off with an ls swap. you can find an ls1 and 6 speed for around $4000. the swap kit is about another $1000, plus wiring and ecm for another $1000. you will need a stout rear, so thats another $4000. and thats just to get it going in a straight line. you will need brakes, so factor another $1000 not to mention all the parts and labor you will need. good luck

I look forward to following this thread and viewing the photos of the progress.
Heres what I am thinking A small block 400 with a with a vortec supercharger with a after market fuel injection .. I will then be able to tune my motor with a lap top on a dyno thats what I am being told..
motor about 3500 450 hp before supercharger
supercharger 5000 vortec
tranny 1000
exhaust 1000
rear 1000
subframe conectors ?
fuel injection like holley or accell 2000
I am guessing around 15,000 would be better guess then 10,000
What do you guys think

seriously, you want 600 streetable HP in a vehicle that isn't designed in its stock form to handle even close to that. To get to that number, you either need more displacement or are running so radical it won't be street friendly. If you want to boost it, then you need to forge the engine and your $3500 estimate is a down payment. The $1k for the tranny is also a deposit.
I know this is a Camaro Forums but if you just have to have 600HP, cut your losses and ditch the vehicle and get something that can come close. Get a 4th gen LS1 and rebuild it to handle boost or forgive me chevy lovers, find a low cost 2003/2004 Terminator and slap on long tubes, change the pulley and injectors and get it dyno tuned (you won't be at 600 but it'll make you stain your shorts).
I suggest that you catch a ride in some cars that have power. My stang and LT1 4th gen will both break free and make the rear end come around if you get on them at 20 mph.
Both are flirting with 300 RWHP.
When I was a teenager my Mopar didn't like to run below 1500 rpm's. I thought it was cool how it sounded and I was just plain stupid because the tires back then had ZERO grip.
It wasn't balanced to handle the power that the engine was making. I only cared about making the engine as strong as possible. I never thought about if my brakes could stop the car.
Wow did not think that 600 hp would be that hard to do and drive on the street been a long time since i have built a street car 1970 nova..
I see all these cars on youtube and streefire that claim all this power on the street so I figured I can do the same thing..
I also have a 95 stock trans am auto 120,000 miles I really thought the ragtop could handle it.. How about tameing it down to say around 400 hp ..

get a top end kit from Elliot port works and a tune from Solomon at LT1pcmtuning.com put on some long tubes and 3 inch catback and call it nice. You'll be there. PM craby on this forum, he's running a kit from Elliot.
claims are nice and many of the silly dyno videos with high numbers are being sprayed or running dangerous amounts of boost unless they have forged asemblies.
yes, good numbers can be made from small displacement engines (Honda has done it for years). Look at the new 5 liter from Ford. But, that engine has so much technology that it isn't cheap. I can't imagine what it would cost to just buy the intake/fuel injection and computer.
Unless you want to spend crazy money on new technolgy engines(and it is crazy to spend on a 3rd or 4th gen) then we're talking OHV engines and running radical cams and compression or big cubic inches is the only normally aspirated way of getting high numbers. To add fuel injection to one of those engnes drives the cost up as well.
As for the vert, get the seats reupholstered, spray on some shiney new paint and enjoy cruising in an American icon.
