Default "pumpkin" question

I have 2 "pumpkins" in the shed in the back of my house. Both still have all the gears and are in working condition with a little work. What i was wondering is could i take one of the old pumpkins ( one original from a 68 chevy c20 ) and the other is the same pattern and all cause it was attached as well. Is that even possible? Im thinking probably not. Even if it would bolt up i dont know about axel splines and all that. Let me know what ya think or if i should check something.

Well, you're probably not going to have the same shim size for the pinion shaft, so you'd have to knife the bearings off both pinions and use the shim from the housing you're gonna use on the pinion from the other. You also need to take gear ratios into account, because the carriers are different for different ratios. Which rears are they? They should be 12 bolt, right?
