STRONG gas smell
Well, havent smelled the can itself, but gas smell is REALLY strong in the trunk...I just bought the car last week. Filled up tank, and it was leaking bad from all those lil hoses. replaced all hoses, EXCEPT the one at the filler neck and the four connected to the separator. I dont have anymore fuel leaks, but can smell the gas. Will replace those four hoses..How do I get to the filler neck hose? Do I have to drop the tank?
You should be able to re plumb your car for non CA vented tank. You may have to aquire a new sending unit or at worst case a non CA tank. I would not completely eliminate tank venting but making it like non CA cars should be good.

K, gonna replace hoses to separator, and get a vented gas cap. Thx alot for the help guys. Wont be a while till I drive it. Getting ready change out subframes. My subframe is bent and it has to be replaced. Bought one for $250. Can anyone send me to the right thread for advice on R/R subframe?
You don't have a filler neck hoes on a '72 Camaro. It's a solid neck from the tank, so no hose to leak.
That canister in the trunk started in 1972 on Ca. cars, and not before. My '71 is a Ca. car and it doesn't have it. I did have the charcoal catch can up front behind the left headlight, and I did like Camaro 69 suggested and plugged it, then bought a vented gas cap and all was fine. I think if you repair the hoses at the tank, then plug the charcoal vent hose and change the gas cap you'll be fine. If by chance you can't find a vented gas cap, or want to save a few bucks; then just cut a groove in the rubber seal on a sealed cap and put it on. Mine is that way, and has been since 1973 when I bought it and ripped it all off.
