Hood clearance

Hood clearance
Hey guys. Just got my 78 Z back after four years. The motor I had in there was a small block with a Performer RPM intake. The hood closed fine, but the area under the scoop was cut out. The piece cut out had the factory dent from the air cleaner stud. Now I'm planing to put my 383 in there with an Air Gap and 1 inch spacer. Probably not gonna fit huh? Without the spacer? What about with Moroso solid motor mounts?

changing motor mounts to lower the engine won't help unless you also lower the transmission, which can lead to other difficulties.
Second gen Camaros do not have much hood clearance. Have you thought about a low profile hood scoop like the Z28s had on the late second gen Camaros. I have the 80-81 Z28 style scoop on mine: http://www.classicchevysofcentraliow...M2007/P11.html
The GM crate motor I have came with a intake manifold that seemed a bit taller than a low profile intake. With no spacer, a holly 4 barrel, and a 9.5 inch non lowered air cleaner (with 2inch element) I could close the hood. But I had to use a regular nut and not a wing nut.

The intake on my crate motor has a GM logo on it. It came on the engine when purchased. A GM 350, 330 gross horsepower, 360 gross torque. At the rear wheels I have 245 horse, 275 torque. While not a rocket it is not slow. I like my hood scoop as it doesn't block my vision and looks like a factory piece. Probably as it was a factory piece, just for a different year.

The Moroso mounts are the same height as factory, just solid steel. Best way to determine what your needs are is to install the motor, then get one of the low profile air cleaners and put it on. Take a straight edge and run a measurement across the fenders to check total clearance.
This one from Summit is a dropped unit and will clear you fuel line and Holley carbs with their longer body. Cheap too! For a little extra clearance you can get a thinner 2" air filter and gain another inch.

I was pretty sure the Moroso mounts were the same. I got a the swap meet for 5 bucks uppers and lowers. I also have one of those ram air boxes you see in the back of Chevy Highperformance.
