Default distributor problems?

Just bought a 1970 camaro with a 396. Mechanic put in new points to get running (had not run for 12 yrs). I put in new plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Car ran for about 5 min then died. There is gas going to carb, there is spark from coil but no spark from wire. Could points have go bad after apprx 1 hr of use? Anythink else I should check? Gas was drained and new filters put on.

If you have a full 12 volts going to the coil, then you fried your points. The stock wiring is resistance wire, with no more than 10 volts feeding the coil. If it's been rewired and you now have 12 volts going in, you'll need to go to the parts store and get a ballast resistor. Put that inline before connecting to the coil. To help start the engine easier, there is a secondary wire from the starter solenoid (if yours is still connected) that feeds a full 12 volts to the coil, only while cranking the engine over.
