ya with the cap off the rotor doesnt turn...how much damage will be done if it is the cam and are u talkin about the camshaft...so it could have just jumped a tooth...will i need to replace the whole gear and cahin assembly or no

 

if it jumped a tooth then the rotor would still turn when the motor is turning. if its not either the chain or the camshaft is broken. i suppose the shear key could be stripped.

 

ok so this is the problem i was dtiving to everett wa from san jose ca i got to portland oregon and the car just died i replace the cap rotor and modulator i took the cap of rotor not spinning the cranks but nothing happens so the problem is between the camshaft maybe broke or the timing chain maybe broke or jumped a tooth but wouldnt it have gone back in place after awhile

 

usually it will only jump one tooth but like i said i have never heard of a lt1 timing chain jumping or breaking, they are very good timing chains. so im still of the thought that its a broken cam or maybe a cotter/shear key has been sheared off and the lower gear is just spinning on the crank.

1976camaro, timing chains can and have broken on people in the past. I've never seen a cam snap, but have seen chains that let loose. But whatever it is doesn't really matter anyway. You're going to need to get your timing chain cover off to see what's going on regardless. The problem is cam/chain/gear related.

 

lol damn i got two threads confused. yah thats the old plastic coated timing gear era. ive changed a few of them.

 

Heh, heh, me too. I had one that had all the nylon coating pieces in the bottom of the pan. Guess that chain was a bit sloppy eh? Still ran ok though.

 

ok well the bad thing is i dont have a job right now and its kinda hard to get a job without a car haha so im low on funds to get her fixed

 

does anyone live near everett washington that will be will to help me fix her up or come take a look at her to see what the problem maybe

 

not me im 5 hrs away. do you have tools you can use? its not that hard to get the timing gear cover off the front of the motor.
