350 slow? need help!
I just bought a 76 camaro. It has a 350 bored 40 over. It has a edelbrock intake and 650 carb. flat top forged pistons. And a mild cam. This is all the the guy told me. It also has headers and flowmaster exhaust. I believe the car has the factory 3 speed auto trans and factory rear in it. My problem is the car has alot of bark but no bite lol. Its actually pretty slow but it sounds really mean. What am i missing to make this car a little faster. I thought these cars were supposed to be pretty peppy from the factory? Thanks for any help you guy or girls could give me.
if it was my car i would give it a good tune up< plugs, wires, air filter or changed over to a more open style to get more air, fuel filter, rotor, cap> or look into getting a cam, better distributor, a manual tranny. and that will unlock some power. maybe even upgrade your heads with some new roller lifters, new rocker arms and push rods. summit and jegs always have good deals going for affordable pricing. good luck.
If you think your engine is running good. I would look into the transmission. I worked on my buddies 79 and he had a stock rebuilt 350 and it seemed to run good but when you stepped on it, it couldn't even move out of it's own way. I had found that the guy that installed the engine and transmission didn't hook up the throttle/kick down cable to the transmission. I installed it and it was a completely different car you stepped on it and it down shifted and hauled ***. a year later it was having issues again. It wasn't shifting quite right, I removed and dissembled the transmission and found several things broken and had found that the trans was actually out of a v6 vehicle. I got a different one and rebuilt it. It was better than ever. Later I changed the rear diff's gear ratio to 3.73. which was amazing for that car. I would highly recommend lowering the gear ratio. 3.73 in my opinion is a really good balance between performance and drivability. Sorry for the long read... But like gearhead79rs had said a good tune up might be a good place to start, and you just need to determine if it's transmission or engine.
I agree! Before you do anything else, figure out what rear gear ratio it has. I'm betting it's something high like 2.73 gears, and a set of 3.73 gears will make an amazing difference!
when i bought my car it was the same deal. it had all the goodies (cam, lifters, intake,650 holley, headers, flowmaster 40's, etc.). the damn thing wouldnt even do a burn out. I ended up getting new plug wires because one wire was resting on the header and it burned through. also, i got an msd pro billet distributor and there was a vacuum line that wasn't connected to the carb that controlled the down shift to the auto trans. After that a little adjustment with the carburator, a k&n air filter, e3 spark plugs, and some new gaskets and i had a new car.
ya, I cant wait to change the gears in my rear end. I'm pretty sure mine are the 2.73's since mine has an open diff and its an auto car. So I know when I do them in mine its gonna haul a$$. Mine already does pretty descent with just ported double humps, torker 2 intake manifold, 650 holley, long tube headers and a full mandrel bent flow master exhaust and a set of harland sharp roller rockers. A cam and gears would be amazing for these cars.
