You must be hooking the advance up to full manifold vacuum instead of ported/timed vacuum. What carb do you have and which port are you plugging into?

No I'm using ported vacuum, the port above the throttle plate. It's an Edelbrock 650 Thunder series but the ports are all in the same spots on all the carbs I've seen. Not sure if I could readjust the idle that low with it connected. I've got the idle set at about 850 without the line connected, it goes well over 2k when I connect it. Pic is with the old 600 carb but still the same port.

Yeah, ported is what you have it connected to alright, hmmm. What happens if you connect it to the drivers side manifold vacuum port?

Haven't tried manifold yet, have the trans modulator connected to that port. Didn't think I wanted the extra advance at idle with the initial timing at 18*. Then again, this seems to be what's happening anyway using ported. I'll see if I can get a video clip of what happens when I plug the line in to ported. I'll check the manifold port also, hopefully I've got a T around here for the modulator line also.

I'm just curious how the vac advance can will react, what make is it?
Your picture shows no vacuum hose/plug on the center PCV port of the carb, was that just off during the photo shoot? I know, probably shouldn't even ask!
Does your carb have a center port in the back to hook the modulator to?

I had trouble with a cheap regulater ,are you using the old side of the engine pump or block off plate with external ,sometimes location can be bad ,i have 105gbh mr gasket 80.00,i had holly with cheap regulater ,it was not regulateing ,an it leaked ,so we got the kit from auto zone ,comes with regulater seems to like 5 psi now ,i also have a electric pump that was made for road master that goes under the car that i may try at some point is 3 to 9 psi there supposed to be good an work on how you hit the throttle as far as the psi about 20.00 ,as the other is so loud sometimes ,but been running that one for 2000 miles ,i know at some point i need to move ,there is this one incline i park on ,an the gas flows back getting air in the line ,then stall one spot ,an sometimes after warm up ,have to hit some gas for it to start, long term ,short term its fine,i have my hose pcv valve on passengers side, man that sure is a nice looking engine ,

It's a Proform adjustable advance can. Yep, I've got the PCV going into the center port and the brake booster off the center back port. I'm going to head out to the garage in a little while here and try to get this figured out.

That sounds reverse of what happens when you pull the vacuum line off the distributor, and get a vacuum leak, which would raise idle. I wonder if your vacuum advance has a leak in it? Putting the line on should lower idle, not raise it.
Those fancy new hold down brackets are often junk. We had the same issue with the '69 Nova I did for my buddy earlier this year. Got it all timed, and locked the bolt down tight, and when I grabbed the distributor to check it moved easily! I had to put it in a vise and give it a whack with a hammer to bend it and get a better grip when tightened.
