Default Broken Bellhousing

Good evening,
I have a 77 Camaro which taught my son a tough lesson this past winter. We had a little bit of snow (unusual for our part of NC) and he was playing around, doing doughnuts in the culdesac. It was all fun and games until the rear wheels found a small amount of dry pavement, bringing the rear wheels to a sudden stop. He wrung the driveshaft and cracked the bellhousing 3/4 of the way around.
Having a new driveshaft made is inevitable, but do I dare put an Ultra Bell on the transmission or spend the cash and buy a whole new one? The tranny had been built to handle 500hp, and only had maybe 2k miles on it, so I hate to throw it out. $300 sounds much better than $1500.
Second, would a sudden stop like this damage the torque converter? It had a 3200 stall one with the same 2k miles. I dont think it would, but I dont want to pull the tranny twice.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
1Sgt

I wouldn't toss it either. I'd either go with the Ultra Bell, or get a core and transfer everything to that. I doubt the converter would be damaged by this happening, but I'd sure have it looked over while the trans is out, before reinstalling it again.
