Default 79 Z28 Camaro (This Will Take A While....)

Okay, so I have had a lot of questions on this section of the forum and I figured instead of starting a new thread I will just make a project thread since I plan on restoring my 79 Z28. Im sure this will take a long time due to me learning everything about mechanics stuff as I go along. Hopefully though it wont take more than about five years for me to get it to a level I am happy with.

So my first question is about my hood. For some reason I cant get it to sit flush with the body. I have adjusted the hinges in every way I can think of and it just wont go down any further. It feels like its hitting something in the middle where the air filter is, but if I look at it while its going down everything seems to clear like it should. So..... any suggestions ?

It's possible your hinges are sprung from someone pushing up on the hood. Have you tried loosening all the hinge bolts that attach the hinges to the fender/body, and then close the hood and push down to see if it goes down?

Some say to bring the front of the hinge up and drop the rear.

There is an adjustment pin in the center of the hood on the cowl area that could be holding it up. Check that out. Is the air filter housing stock? Pull that off and see if it goes.

The center pin must be something newer. My '71 doesn't have one of those. But mine does have two catch pins in the rear that hook into the rear of the hinges. If those are out of adjustment the hood can sit on top of them and it wont go down.

looks like your door and fender dont line up either. if your not gonna drive it as is just leave it until the resto is done, it might match up once the fender is put on propperly? mine was like that before it went in for paint and they just had to line up everything propperly and put some shims here and there its a PITA.

good luck with the project more pics plz

thanks for the info guys, but i think you're right 80zjoe, the fenders are missing more than one bolt and i have problems with the doors not opening easily. so everything is probably out of alignment.

as far as the pins go i have removed all of them and it still wont go all the way down. i will try to adjust the hinges a little more when i get home today.

so i redid the hinges and put the back ones down and the top ones all the way up and it has it ALMOST there. It still sticks up by about half an inch. But it looks a lot better now. Thanks for the help guys.

That's great! Always good when you can accomplish a few little things to make the car look better!

Can you push the hood down the rest of the way by hand? My 76 Nova stuck up 1/2" but it was the springs being stiff. A push from my hand got it done. Also you can slot the front holes on the hinge, this will probably do it.
