What I need to say is are the axle housing tubing outer diameter of a Ford 9” and a 10 bolt Chevy the same outer diameter?

Yes, and no. Most Ford 9" axle housings are 3" like a Chevy 10 bolt, but there were a few Lincoln Versailles and big T birds that used a larger 3.25" axle tube.

Thanks. So if they have the same diameter, is it possible to order a ford 9” with a GM housing ends instead of Ford housing ends? Is this possible? Will it harm the rear end by doing this?

Why would you want GM housing ends? You'll be getting axle shafts when you buy a housing (or you should!) and GM 10 bolts are set up for c clip axles, which is the last thing you want with a high performance car. Even if they would put them on, there's no way to hold the axles in, as the Ford 9" wont accept c clip axles.

I am not much informed about a Ford 9". So ford 9" are without C clip?

What it means when they say C-clip eliminator, are they referring to a ford 9"?

The housing ends on the aftermarket housings are designed to hold the axles in place if they were to fail. You can buy c clip eliminators that will bolt up to your stock axle tubes but they tend to leak and create clearanc issues with disc brakes. You want the big bearing housing ends that will work with allow for Gm or aftermarket disc brake set up. The manufacturer should be asking you al the right questions during the ordering process.

C clip eliminators are for GM rear axles that have the c clips inside the differential holding the axles in. These rear axles don't have a bolt in bearing retainer on the backing plate or axle end. 9" Fords all have bolt in axle ends, and as Hardtopjoe mentioned you should be getting the large bearing ends. If you call the supplier of whatever axle you're looking at they can answer all these questions, and also point you in the right direction. They can set up the axle ends for whatever brake system you want, but most std. 9" Ford large ends have tons of disc brake options to support whatever style or brand of disc brake you could imagine.

Thank you guys. Yes moser asked me what breaks I will use and Baer asked me what axle I am having.

I noticed that for Ford 9", there are different hosing patterns such as Late big ford and Early big ford. I assume that it will be the late big ford pattern which comes with after market ford 9"?

You can order a 9" from moser in about any configuration under the sun. Personally I have two ways I am pondering, well three but the last is not part of this discussion. I could order a 9" that has the Torino big bearing ends. But the flange will have the same pattern as a 10 bolt. The reason is the same as mentioned by Joe. I have disc brakes from a 4th gen.

On the flip side I was quoted a set up from a respected rear end builder using the stock 10 bolt. This involved using housing ends that were probably the same as the 9". This way I can avoid c clip issues and retain the stock rear and brakes. I want to say the axles were for Hobby Stock cars if my brain is firing on all 8. In the end I could have built either one for about the same money and either would be fine in my application.

So call Moser and have the PN ready on your brakes so you can tell them what you have. I just learned the other day that the hub center on the 12 bolt axles is the diameter of the older 12 bolts. Wilwood has changed the diameter of the center hole on their rotors three times in the last ten years for no apparent reason other than because. As it is right now the axle hub is larger then the hole in the rotor. Moser turns the hub down on their package rears to fit. You will need the PN's for your brakes so they can verify the hub will indeed fit. Granted this is for the "crate" 12 bolt rears they sell and I have no idea on 9" or 10 bolts but shipping to your part of the world is probably not cheap or fast.

Since you're buying everything new, you don't have to worry about what end they use on the axle. Just tell them to put on the one that's the most often used. That will get you a good common flange. Then order brakes for the same end.
