Default Instrument Cluster Swap

As with everything, I doubt this is a simple swap out. I want to replace my current instrument cluster (pictured) with real gauges to replace the red idiot lights. For instance, if I just pull the bezel and gauges, can I just put in a gauged setup from classic industries?, Just want to get a feel for the amount of work I need to do.

I can't say for sure, but I doubt you're going to find the swap plug n play. Going from illuminated instruments to stepper motors is likely going to require some controller modifications. It's definitely a good move though, your side by side photos... the choice is clear.

Hopefully there are some others here who can offer more specifics, but you could also call up the folks at https://www.instrumentclusterstore.com/ they're a great source of info.

Thanks, I'm still looking at it. I called the manufacturer and they said I'll have to cut up harness, locate hi/lo beam, signal, etc and plug them in myself. Thats maybe a little more than I bargained for but may go for it.

I did notice the 1977-1981 instrument cluster has gauges and appears to be the exact same harness connector. I wonder what would happen if I swap out with one of those.

Well I did find a 1979 instrument cluster at a junk yard, and it is in perfect condition with all tabs intact. It looks like a direct sway, I know I have to run lines for the new gauges, but the blinkers stuff will all work right off the bat.

But, on the 79' the blinker lights aren't on the mottom, they are in the middle. The cluster has a small clear plastic that takes the light from the bottom and sends it up to the middle. If I cut those off it looks like I'm in business. But should I? I could just buy a 1979 bezel to make it all work. My bezel in currently in perfect shape.

Dakota digital makes some nice looking clusters that you can swap in, and they can be had with the correct adapters to make everything work. I haven't installed mine yet, mostly because its 700 to 800 dollars and I am still working on parts for the engine. :P Definitely the way i am going to go when the time comes. If I beat you to it I will let you know how hard it is to install.

It shouldn’t be too hard, and did you find one?
