Check out the electrical section of your local hardware store, they make grommets pretty small. You don't need to drill a big hole in the firewall either, a 1/4" hole should do the trick. And the grommet will keep any air or fumes from getting inside the car. Just make sure the back side of the firewall is clear of any obstructions before drilling. Going "oops" while drilling usually doesn't end well.

I got home from class and i found out:
The fan is 12v/10 amp
The wire is 13 amp/ 156 watts
The switch is 10 amp max

So from what i learned i should get a switch rated up to 15 amps?
Also, the in-line fuse that is currently 25amps, should i switch it to 15 amps?

Yes to both. The fan uses 10 amps when it runs, but the initial draw when you first turn it on can be greater than that. And you don't want to use a bigger fuse than what's needed, or you could smoke a wire instead of the fuse if there's a short.

i got the 15 amp switch and while i was taking my dash apart to see where i could mount the switch i decided to get a new cig lighter too(so i can plug in a gps or phone charger). It turns out that o'reillys doesn't carry them and neither does the dealership. The guy at the dealership told me that they are discontinued as of a couple years ago. Does anyone know where i can find a new one? I haven't started looking yet, just figured a couple sets of eyes are better than just mine.

Job complete. i used the same hole that the carburetor uses so that was pretty convenient. The hardest part was getting myself to drill a 1/2 inch hole in my brand new dash lol. I practiced on a plastic flower pot i had laying around in the garage. It came out pretty nice. Now i just need to find a cigarette lighter assembly that works.

The only thing is "off" is on top and "on" is on the bottom. not a fan...no pun intended.

I've been in electronics for 35 years and I wouldn't run a heavy gauge wire from the cabin to power an electric fan. The only good way is with a relay. That runs a high current capable circuit to the fan directly from the battery through a circuit breaker or a fuse.

When I bought my 77 LT it had house wire run from the cabin. I've since bought a Painless relay kit. The object is to keep the heavy gauge wire as short as possible. The kit does that and it has a thermostatic switch that mounts in the head or intake manifold but you could easily do the same thing with a manual switch. The best way is to put the switch in the ground line to the relay coil and the high side of the coil goes to ignition switched 12 volts.

Make certain the "15 amp" switch is rated 15a. at 12 volts, not 15a. at 120v. or 250v. If it's rated 15a. at the higher voltage, then it wont hold the 15a. at 12v. because at the lower voltage those switches will only hold less than 5a.

Very true Val. High voltage low amps, low voltage high amps.
