ok thanks..that clip in the pic looks bigger than mine..i got one of the copper colored clips at Shucks but it smaller and harder to get around the crank and doesn't stick in the grooves as much..does that matter?

Two things. If the clip is a loose fit when it's on, you can squeeze it tighter with a pliers first, then put it back on. Your clip may be shorter than what it wants to be for how you have it on now. If you look at your crank you'll see one end has a "tab" extension on the collar. If you're putting your clip on from that side, try sliding it on from the other end instead and see if that takes care of it.

ok..well the top of the clip is sticking up a little from the collar like the pic..thats ok right? and is it ok if i bent one end of the clip a little so it doesn't stick out too much in the groove but still sticks out a little?

Yes, that's fine. And you don't have to bend the hooks. It wants to stick out past the slot, and it won't hurt anything. Plus those are bent up like that to help the spring removal tool to push on for getting the crank back off.
