Hey guys,
I am looking at buying a 77 Camaro, with a 350, manual trans.in CA. The seller has to get it smogged to sell it. When he went to get it smogged they told him it needed A air pump check vavle, erg valve, new exhaust and a cadalatic converter. (About $500 of stuff) I am getting a pretty good deal on the car ($1500 ) so my question is do you think it will be hard to get it to pass a smog check? Has anyone ever had a problem like this? Thanks

 

my truck wouldnt pass emissions so i put 2 new cats and new dual exhaust in it and it still didnt pass. ilive in oregon which has as tough or almost as tough emission laws. i ended up taking it to a shop and they leaned the carb out a bit and after i took the test they tuned the carb back up, it all cost me $30 and i passed the test with flying colors. It has a mildly built 350 with absolutely no (except cats) emission stuff on.

 

I live in San Diego CA and i bought my camaro for 1000, it needed a new exhaust and cats which ran aobut 800. After that it passed no problems. The exhaust you have is probably just rotted out and leaks the smog. After you fix those things it should pass. Make sure you have a proper aircleaner on it. It has to pass a visual check first. Make sure you give it a good tune up before the sniffer test. A poor running engine will fail, even with new cats. Also make sure the engine is fully warmed up and the cat lit up before testing, as cold cats do not burn smog.

 

try pouring denatured alcohol in the gas tank prior to taking it to the smog place...pour about a gallon into a full tank of gas. what the alcohol does is burn off carbon. a friend of mine did that and he passed.

 

Wow im glad we dont have emission checks where I live. My Camaro would never be able to pass.
