I recently purchased a 1971 Camaro. I had one 25 years ago and have been wanting another since the very day I sold it. I finally bought one and I’m trying to figure out what type of Camaro it is. It’s proven difficult to determine any options this car was built with (SS, RS, Z28)
The VIN tells me it was built in Norwood the 2nd week of April and is an original v8 car. The motor is a replacement 350, so that’s no help and I don’t have any original paperwork. It has dual exhaust, three speed automatic on the floor, and the speedometer is original as well and it reads 150mph, and it has factory AC.
I did find the “body by fisher” tag and that says it was mulsanne blue with black interior.
If any of you have any tips on how to determine the original build of the car I would greatly appreciate it. It doesn’t really matter to me, but curiosity has gotten the best of me over the last week.
thanks everyone!!!
You might get lucky and find a build sheet behind the back seat or on top of the gas tank.
Ok I will definitely check those spots. The car is in pretty good shape, and I haven’t had a chance to really dig into it yet. Hopefully you’re right and I’ll get lucky and find a build sheet! Thanks for the response!
Some, not all Norwood cars (like yours) had a code for the SS option. The absence of a code doesn't mean it isn't one though. If you do find a build sheet, go out and buy a lottery ticket while you're on a lucky streak.

Hahaha, I will keep that in mind. I don’t think the seats are original, they just look and feel to good to be, so I think my only hope would be to find the build sheet on the gas tank. I did notice I have drum breaks in the rear and disc breaks in the front. It also has 2 sections for emblems on both quarter panels and according to the man I bought it from, the metal is all original. That is encouraging but I’m not holding my breath. As I said before, if it’s a base model, I’m ok with it, but it would be nice to know what options it had.
Thanks again for the advice guys! Here is a shot of the car. Again I haven’t had much time to crawl all over it yet, but as soon as I do, the gas tank will be the first place I look. 👍
Nice 71!! I have a 71 307SBC base with Rally Sport package. What's the plan on your build?
Hey 71maro! Nice! I’d love to see a pic! I had a 73 rally sport 350 years ago. As far as the 71, I haven’t completely settled on what direction I’ll be heading in. The first step was getting the car running. Finally running well, but stopping and steering is another story! Lol
I’m going to install rear disc brakes and put new rotors on the front. Installing some new front steering and suspension as well. The car wasn’t driven for about 14 years, but luckily it was covered during that time. Took the one piece bumper off the front and will be going with split bumpers, just like that look better. The interior is in great shape which is good and the body just needs some minor repairs around drivers front lower quarter.
I’ll try and keep some pics coming as things progress!
Do you have a lot of work to do on your 71?
