Default VIN - I have a weird one - can you help me to identify?

Hi guys,

first of all, is it safe to post a VIN or is it something I should keep to myself?

Then, I checked all the VIN decoder and I can't find anything matching it.

I have a 1979 red with white stripes Camaro, 350, 5.7l, V8 and I am trying to figure out where it comes from

The VIN, that I can find on the dashboard (reading it from outside the car, through the windscreen) is composed by two parts:

- IS87G
- 9L5*****

Is it original?

First digit is GM Division: 1 = Chevrolet

Second digit is model: Q = Sport Coupe, Rally Sport and Z28, S = Berlinetta

Digits 3 & 4 are body type: 87 = 2dr. coupe

Fifth digit is engine code: D = 250ci, G = 305ci, L = 350ci

Sixth digit is model year: 9 = 1979

Seventh digit is N for Norwood assembly, L for Van Nuys.

Last six digits increased one with each car built at each plant.

Thanks a lot 77nomad - your answer brought me nearer to the car, now that I know exactly what I'm dealing with.

IT is very strange though, because it is running a 350ci 5.7 V8 with 4bbl Edelbrok carburetor. I didn't know of a 305ci model with it.

May it be possible that they added the 350ci engine on a 305 Berlinetta model? If so, does it lose any value or is it any bad?

Thanks !

It was probably swapped out years ago. I don't think anyone would be upset that it was a 350. Berlinettas aren't exactly collectors items to begin with so I would say the value would be the same either way. I wouldn't call it strange either.

If you want to know more look at your trim tag under the hood on the front fender of the drivers side and decode that on nasty28.com

I did it to my camaro and i know what month and shift my car was made on.

This way you can find out what options came on your car and if they are still there or they got changed.
