Thumbs up Unknown Part

I was wondering if anyone knows what this might be. It is mounted behind the upper rear seat. It is oval in shape and is made of sheet metal. It has nothing going into it or anything coming out of it. No wiring or duct work. I was thinking possibly something to deaden sound from the trunk area or the rear axle noise. The car is a 1971 base Camaro , automatic , 307 engine. Thanks for any help.

That's a fuel vapor separator. If your gas tank has 3 ports on it, then there used to be vent lines that connected from the gas tank to the separator, and one line from the separator went to the front of the car connecting to the charcoal canister. The purpose of the vapor separator is to prevent liquid gas getting into the charcoal canister.
