u joint problem
i was wondering if i am the only one to encounter this. i have changed many u joints on different cars before, but when i went to change them in my camaro i noticed that the rear u joint doesn't have the inner snp rings holding it in and i can't tell what is holding it in it looks like it is the factory joint and it is a 77 camaro and no matter what i try the just won't come out includung trying the bench vise so any help would be appreciared
the easiest way to remove the nylon is to heat it with a torch, it will come out of the hole like a worm. I have seen the yoke break if you press them out. once the nylon is out then you can remove them like any other U-Joint
The problem with using a press on ujoints is that you end up deforming the yoke and the new ujoint will not operate smoothly once installed. To remove GM's nylon injected ujoints, you have to heat the yoke untill the noylon squirts out, then after it cools set the ujoint end crossways in a vise and strike the yoke using a hammer to remove the ujoint bearing cap, flip it and drive the other cap out. Once the joint is out you need to clean the rest of the noylon out with a pick or the new joint will be a ***** going in. Installing it just tap the caps in with a hammer, set the lock clips, and strike the yoke once on each end to loosen the ujoint. I do them all this way and have done a set in about ten mins, although it takes more time to rebalance the shaft. What you need to know about the injected shafts is when they are built and balanced those joints don't get centered in the yoke before the shaft gets balanced and when you replace them you have to rebalace the shaft especially since you've heated and hammered on it.
the torch worked guys thanks for all the help i just can't beleive that u joint was 30 years old and it was i decent shape to i just figured i would replace them while the engine is out
