It's really up to you in my opinion. If you want to use splatter under a mat you can, but I think you have to use a spray gun for that. If it's going under carpet I'd tape of the rest of the area so you don't overspray on your rear window or painted parts of your car and then use Medium gloss black spray paint. As long as you have something to prevent rust. The carpet is up to you as well. If your not going for exact originality then do it the way you want.

Spatter paint is a great way to give an original appearance. There are some tricks to doing it though. Try to get good coverage in one coat. Each subsequent coat will make the surface rougher sometimes getting to the point of ugly and not stock looking. We have tried several brands of spatter paint and have not found any that hold up well in the long run. Because of this we clearcoat after applying the spatter. To keep appearance correct the clearcoat is mixed with flattener to kill the gloss. You can use a cheaper urethane clear, make sure to allow extra dry time for the spatter (48 hours). The clear also give a better moisture seal.

do i have to use a spray gun to apply the splatter? and how do you attach the mat? do you just place it on top of the paint or glue it?

ok i decided not to use the splatter paint because you wont be able to see it anyway under the carpet right? so im just going to use black paint and then put the trunk mat over it?

ok well yesterday i sprayed my trunk with 2 coats of that rust fix..that turns rust to a black primer and i was hoping that it would turn my whole trunk black too but it didnt so im going to buy some black primer and spray that over the whole trunk...but would the rust stop if i sprayed over it? or would it still continue to eat the metal?

You can buy that trunk splatter in a spray can.I did it 4 years ago and it still looks good. Its not a truck so there is not much wear and tear on it

well i painted my trunk with a black rubberized primer since the rust fix only turned the rust spots black..i was gonna go with the splatter but it doesn't really matter since the trunk mat is going over it..im still going to put a trunk mat in so this pic is a middle step but i thought it would post an update
