Default Paint/body work question?

Quick story before I ask my question. I bought a ws6 style hood for my Z about a yeah and half ago and I painted it then as well. Well at that time, I got all the supplies from the local auto paint store near me and he told me some stuff to do. Now, I am prepping and repainting my hood bc it chipped over time.

I went to the auto body place today and I was talking to the guy and he said the type of paint I first used was acrylic enamel. He said that is just to get something painted, no clear coat and not the best. I am now going to buy the urathane base coat and clear but I have to sand the acrylic off first he said. That leads to my question. To get ALL the paint off is taking forever. Can I sand most of it off and then prep it and prime it so it covers the old paint or do I have to go all the way down to the fiberglass?

Sorry for the lost post btw.

If a perfect world you want to sand to the hood factory primer but not into the gel coat. But yes it all needs to come off.

The scotchbrite pads make quick work of the paint. It should not take more then an hour to strip a hood.

Oh ok thanks. The guy gave me 80 grit for my DA and he said that would work but the second the DA hits it, it went straight to the gel so I said eff that.

DA's are great to leveling and finish work but when it comes to striping I like a 7" sander/buffer

Alright cool. I'm going to head back to the auto body place when I can and ask them if they have a disk like the one you posted. I can get disks of that same surface for free at work, but they are like 2" for my dye grinder lol that would take a while as well.

Ya 2" would take awhile I keep those to headgaskets and waterpumps . The 4 inch are very common also but with something large (like a Camaro hood) the 7" are the way to go.
