Default Transmission help ?¿

Is it hard to switch an automatic 79 camaro over to a manual?

Also with all the technology we have now a days, are there transmissions were you can just put it in Drive and go but also if you want to manually shift?

Are you gettin that idea from a newer car>?...I get the impression that your thinkin of something like some of the Maxima's or the G6's with the automatic but it also is a slap stick...

I guess something like that, basically I want the car to be an automatic so i can just go out and drive when i want but if i want to have fun and manually shift I can without doing any damage to the tranny or motor.

You can shift it manually now if you want, with no damage.
Better yet, is to install a ratchet shifter, or a dual-gate shifter. That way, when you're "having fun" you won't "oops" a shift, accidentally putting it into reverse, and ruining the trans, driveshaft, or rearend.

Thats what I did...I have a 350T in my 81...I dont like rachet shifters....I had one in and was goin down the highway pushin 70+...and My now ex-girlfirend was moving around and threw that thign in reverse....dropped me right out...I jus installed a B&M Mega Shifter...dont have to worry about that at all...

About that slap stick thing...Im sure theres a way to put one in...but its prolly gonna come at a big price...unless you know some high people and can pull some favors...I love doin the same thing...I jus drop it down into one whenever I see a Stang who thinks they can run with me...its jus as much fun as a stick...

How does that mega shifter work? Do you have to pull on the lever and the handle? Would it fit if i have the center console in the camaro?

its a t-handle...Theres a little lever in front that i use my middle and ring finger to pull up and put it in reverse...In R you can jus slide down to N then to D...to put it into 2 jus lift lever and pull down same for 1....**BUT** you dont need to lift the lever back up to shift back up...it'll stop in 2 then push the shifter up again to D...it will let you slide into N without lifting he lever put it wont let you go into R...its called a Reverse Lock-out feature...believe me its a gift...lol

Mine came the Auto store..so it came with a little dress up bo that goes around it with a chrome topper...I have to re-position my bolts to put my console back in...as of now I cant **** into one with my old console in...which I want to put back in...

Guy on here I was talkin to...bought his out of Jegs I think...it was called the "Console Edition". It was made to fit into your console and it it fit into the boltholes of the shifter plate...he told me it cost around 230**( I think). Dont get me wrong it looks Great!...go to the "lets see your ride" thread on here in the 2nd Gen forum and look for it...it might be around the 7th or 8th page....Red Camaro...it shows pics of the inside to give u a pic of what Im talkin about...

NOW..If you dont get that special edition...dry fit the shifter on the hump with the console jus in there...put it in park and make sure it doesnt hit....put it all the way down in 1 and make sure it clears there too...mark the holes with a sharpie and you got your drill points...If your worried about the cosmetics side of it...it shouldnt be hard to get a plate and cut out the pattern and drill the holes....paint it to match...

The megashifter is a ratchet shifter and most ratchet shifters require lifting a gate to let them through to park and reverse. If what happened in your above statement is right then it's probably not a true ratchet shifter.
