Default transmission

i have a 1970 camaro with a saginaw 3 speed tranny but not the original straight 6 motor i have a 350 motor v8. i am wondering how easy would it be to upgrade it to a 4 speed or 5 speed. what kind would be recommended to get the most performance.

i know virtualy nothing about manual trannys besides the fact youll have to put in a cluch petal. witch might be a pain. im a 2 gear power glide and Turbo hydromatic guy. the 2 gear can take alot of power well and the th350 th400 built right can take hole alot to. but besides the pedal its very easy to swap out trannys. most trannys will not to be to long or short and your stock shaft will fit. if i would recomend anything for manual and keap in mind i dont do manuals ide go with a 4 speed from a early z28. that would give you both street and strip useability.

p.s. are you wanting a manual cuseyou want to be more intamant with the drive. cuse if you want that you could always put on a ratchet shifter. im tellin ya, it brings a auto tranny to life.

If you found a 4 speed out a a camaro it would bolt right in. You would need the shifter of course. The muncie 4 speeds are the strongest but they also the most costly. If you can drill and tap holes you have pick a 4 speed from just about any 70's GM product besides a hvy truck and drill out the tail shaft to accept the Camaro sytle shifter.

Keep an eye on the spline count coming out of the trans, You may need the output yoke from the doner car.
