Default Tranny Conversion

My buddy had a 4 speed tranny and wants to convert to a 6 speed. Seems he hired some kid to do the work who has skipped town with theparts and left him high and dry.The Camao is a 1980 Z-28 I believe or a conversion. I can probably get photos if you need them. We've been looking at the Tremec T56for year models 1993 thru 2003. What vehical/model trannies could be used that will bolt up to a 383. Would the shifter have to be in the front mounting position or the rear location. What about the bellhousing anddrive shaft etc.Any and all info would be great. He's ready to move on this so if someone has a setup they want to sell that's completelet me know.

I would go with a T-56 and it would have to be mounted in the foward location. The thing you have to get is a bell housing to make it work. Driveshaft will have to be lightened.

Is there a particular bell housing that needs to used. There are several tannies on eBay right now with bell housings that arealmost conplete packages. The 383 is a modfied 350 and I was under the impression they hadn't changed the bell housing bolt pattern on any of the 350's. But again that's here say. I need some really good advise before I spend this guys money on something that isn't going to work. Should I find a tranny and then the bell housing seperate? Is there someplace on the web I can go to and research all the things I need to do for the upgrade? Is there a company that sells a package just for what we want todo? Thanks for all the help. I really want to helpget this guy going. Take care all and Happy New Year.

You can't use a T5 shifter on the T56 cuz the T5 is for a 5 speed and the T56 is a 6 speed. There are bell housings out there for the SBC but they're hard to find. I can't think of a place to get one off hand. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, I was out of the country.

Hey I appreciate any responses I get. If someone knows where to get a bell housing to bolt a Borg Warner T-56 up to the ealry model enginesplease jump in here. Also what does the LS1 stand for. Is it a 3rd generation designation? Is the bolt pattern different than on gen 2 motors than later models? I'm not giving up on this one just yet

It would be nice to slip a t 56 behind the stock motor in my 68. I would like to strip an LS1 and run a carb, paint it and run the original pullys so it looked more stock but I cant find any info on doing the swap.
