Default Steering wheel Judder at low speed

My 1980 v6 229 AT (that I bought new in 1980) has developed a judder in the steering wheel when maneuvering at very low speed < 5 mph, eg when getting in or out of a parking space. It feels like the power steering is kicking on and off, the wheel is very hard to turn in either direction. When I increase revs the problem is reduced and the problem is not at all present once I'm moving faster than 5 - 10 mph. I've checked the fluid level and the fan belt, do I need a new steering pump? It has about 150,000 miles on it.
Thanks

Maybe, but is there an A/C cut out switch on yours.

The fan belt doesn't run the power steering. Check that belt, replace it most likely.

If the PS belt is good, then your pump is most likely bad. I'd have someone turn the wheel back and forth while you look into the pump reservoir with a light. You should see if the pump is circulating smoothly, or cavitating.

Thanks, I'll check everything out, replace the belt and try to replace all the fluid too as it must be pretty old by now.
