What you are looking for is not what a stall converter is for. Stall speed is the RPM the engine will pull at when you step on it. It is intended to bring the engine into it's power band off the line. Before you start shopping for a stall, you need to consult a dyno sheet or at very least the card that tells you the approximate horsepower curve your cam will produce. Dyno is best, going by the cam card might have you changing a second time. If the engine was built by a reputable shop they should be able to supply you with some good info.

You're thinking way too low, you want to be at least, or even above the 2,000 range. The very best thing to do is to contact a couple of converter companies directly (B&M, TCI, etc.).

Continued in next post, the site is still messed up and limiting the length.

Choosing the right converter has everything to do with how the engine is built. The same converter will react differently with an engine having it's peak power band that's different from yours. The tech guys will use your build info to determine the best rpm range based on your engine and your driving preferences. Contact more than one and get an average between them, or go with the common answer. Choosing the best converter isn't like going to the grocery store and pulling whatever sounds good to you.

try lowering the idel speed, do you have a tach, what rpm is it at in gear and out of gear,i dont think the stall is your problem,i'm guessing you have the idel speed to high, let me know.

i would suggest you need a 10" with 3000rpm stall .

this may sound like it wont pull off till 3000rpm but it will pull from quite a lot lower down in reality .

you want the FLASH stall of the 3000rpm converter and then when you hit the gas from a standstill it will allow the engine to rev a little thus giving you better take off .

something like an ART CARR 10" would suit you just fine .

i had an art carr 10" converter in a 1973 camaro with 3.42 posi and a 350 smallblock with a crane 302H cam , and an offenhauser inlet with 660 holley centre squirter + headers etc .
drove great .

now i have a 78 camaro with a 355 smallblock + 4.11 posi and 9" 4500 stall converter , but its mostly for strip use rather than street .

most people tend to go too low an RPM for high stall converters .

if you run say 2.73 stock gears or 3.42 posi , then the 10" converter will give you good normal everyday driving plus some extra over stock on the strip .

for most drag racing youd want to go down to a 9" 4000rpm stall and 4.11 or lower gears if you have an engine with a cam operatingin the 3200-6500rpm range ..

many people have different views but this is mine .
