Default Seat belt help

I just bought a 79 rally sport, and recently noticed that when testing the seat belts they do not seem to work. The front belt retract just fine, but if I pull hard on then, they do not stop. I do not think this is normal and was wondering if any knew of seat belt repair or maybe I am wrong and you just need to be in an accident for seat belts to work properly.
thanks

not worth testing, I would buy a new set for the car....when they are that old it's just not worth the pain.

Your retractors might be the "inertia" type, not the "quick jerk" type. Strap yourself in, take the car out,get yourself moving a good clip, then jam on the brakes. If they're working right, they'll grab.

They are that kind...but the belts may have some dry rot...and they are fairly cheap.
