Default Rear end indentification question

Hey guys, someone replaced my original 74 rear end with a 77 camaro rearend with a higher gear (2.56). Is there anyway to tell the original rear end without the sale sheet that comes with it when originally bought from the dealer with the RPO codes? They don't put this information anywhere on the car do they?

it is stamped on the rear end, here is a site that can help you find it and identify it,but i really dont think there is a way sorry but i could be wrong. sorry i kinda read your post wrong but this site can tell you all kinds of stuff about your car,and are you sure it is out of a 77 and that is the right ratio

Supposedly there's an alpha-numeric number stamped on the passenger side axle tube that will tell you ratio and other info. I made a half heated attempt to find mine the other day but didn't have the time or patience to clean 30 years of road grime and solidified under coat.

73CamaroSS> Yeah, I already know about the number on the passenger side, that's how I know it's out of a 77 camaro with 2.56:1 gears rather than performance gears. I've made a cheat sheet to take with me to places so I can check them in case I find one in great condition.

mikes77camaro> Yeah, you'll need to do some scrubbin' to find it. I had to take an air drill with a wire brush end to knock the crap off mine when I first bought it. I was hoping for a PY (3.42 locking) end but came up with a PH (2.56 non-locking).

What I'm looking for is a way to find out what the original rear-end was in my car. According to Nastyz28 in the 74 year codes there was a 4.10 rear end and I was wondering if they put these behind turbo400's and the 3.42's behind turbo350's.
