Mystery Box!
While I was taking out my 81's center console, I found this box attached to the console (directly under the radio)
it doesnt have any switches or what not, but it is connected to lots of wires
if needed, ill get better pictures tomorrow. (ill have a better camera)
could it be the governor?
tally ho, govna!, wot wot! [8D](i can't find the sarcasm smiley [>:])

RE: Mystery Box!
Oh darn, this thread isn't what I had hoped it was going to be about!
Well, lets see...a big box with GM markings on it...naaaah, they were probably just getting rid of garbage at the factory and didn't know where to go with it!!
Actually, that's your ECM (engine control management) the "computer" for lack of a better word. You only need that if you want your engine to run. Unless you've gutted the original engine electronics and gone "old school".
Pip, Pip old boy. And a rat-a-tat too!!!

RE: Mystery Box!
Only one carb?
Then with a stand-alone (non computerized) distributor, your engine won't need the "brain-box".
But what trans do you have? If you have an automatic, it would be the700R4, unless you're going with something different. For the 700R4 you'll need a separate torque converter lock-up control that's available in the aftermarket world.

RE: Mystery Box!
yep, one carb. i want at least decent gas mileage, lol
stepdad wants to change the carb we bought because this one would only give us about 325-350 horsies.
i have the original standard tranny (i like shifting, hehe)
and ill just pretend that i know what the distrubutor is[8D] (im guessing its the thingy that puts the gas in the engine?)

RE: Mystery Box!
Hee, hee, close! The distributor is that upright thingy that's mounted to the back of the intake manifold thingy, and it has a bunch of spark plug wires on top. It "distributes" (catchy name eh?) power to theplug wires and down to the spark plug thingys!!!
