I've broken a couple 10 bolts when I was racing the '71, but once I went through the present one and got everything dialed in I've never had another problem. The 10 bolt in my Camaro has been in there since 1982.
I put a pair of Dutchcmans axles in it, C clip eliminator kit, and PowerTrax locker. New gears, but can't remember now what brand they are. After all the changes it's been indestructable, even when the slicks really hooked up. Of course I only raced it for 7 yrs. after the rework, but that's enough to know it works well behind my 427.

thank you...also this is the "code" stamped on the axle (1 F G278 1) passenger front side but, it doesn't match up with anything I have found associated with a 79 camaro...so I suspect that it isn't original, even though it "looks" stock...any Ideas?

The F indicates it's from a Camaro. The G indicates it's from Detroit Gear, the assembly plant. Not sure on the numbers, but maybe the 78 indicates 1978??

impression
that (278) was the day of the year it was made...but that doesnt
help me find what the gear ratio is

Got no idea if 278 is the day of the yearr. I'd be surprised if they got that exacting. To find the gear ratio just pop the cover and count ring gear and pinion gear. Then divide the ring gear number into the pinion. Or jack it up and see if it's posi or not. If it's posi you can mark the tire and see how many turns the driveline makes with one turn of the tire. That's your ratio. If it's not posi then leave one wheel on the ground and do it, then double that to get your ratio.
