Default Pumping clutch to start?

Hey guys,

I just bought a 78 and am starting to work out all the problems. When I went to look at the car, the owner always started the car. The first time I went to start it up not in his driveway, It wouldn't start. Changed the battery cables, poured gas into the carb etc. Still wouldn't start. A few hours later, I went back to start it, and after 10 tries, my left foot was getting tired and I pumped the clutch, and it started to turn over. I started pumping faster and it started up.

My Question:

Why did I have to pump it? What could be wrong? What do I have to worry about? Am I just an idiot and am lacking sleep, and that is how you start a car??

Thanks
Jon

Pumping it sounds ridiculous. All I can think of is the clutch needs to be in to start. There is a switch that needs to be made in order to start.

I reread my post and I wasn't as clear as I thought. I did push the clutch in, that is why my foot was tired. I just was turning the key and released the clutch. That started to turn it and it started. Maybe I am pushing the clutch too far in or I'm missing the switch..

I agree with Damon; it sounds like the clutch interlock switch is out of adjustment. You need to locate the switch and jumper it to see if it starts up. If it does, then replace or adjust the switch to work properly.

Your clutch safety switch (clutch for dummies) may be broken, corroded internally, or have a bad wiring connection.

Considering they're out on the subframe under the hood, they get subjected to a lot of extreme weather.
