power capability of a 2 bolt main?
i know the 4 bolt main is better to have...but on my 400 its 2 bolt, original so im not discarding it...what kind of power does a 2 bolt handle up to...if im looking for over 500 am i asking to much?
I assume you are talking about a 400 chevy smallblock, The 400 is a bit out of the norm as far as smallblocks go the 2 bolt 400 is more desirable than the 4 bolt because of thin webbing issues. in general though the 2 bolts are rated at 400 hp . I would really have the block checked out well including sonic checking especially if you plan on a supercharger. If you goal is true reliable performance go with a dart block.
I kind of wondered when you said original engine... I had a 400 455 before niether one put out that kind of power you are right though I dont know a whole lot about them.... just gave the last 4 bbl manifold away lol
if you want to strengthen up a 2 bolt main block (whether it be 305 350 400 chev or pontiac) there are a couple minor things that you can do. instead of using the capscrews that are in the block, get a set of main studs. much stronger and helps prevent cap walk. and also, get a main girdle. it helps stiffen up the block a bit as well as pretty much eliminating cap walk. with those two things, after getting the block checked over really well, and you should have no problem running 500 horse
