4 bolt main

4 bolt main
when my engine builder pulled the oil pan my motor to install the oil pump he made a very cool discovry. It was a 4 bolt main block (I have every recept all the way back to the window sticker that came in the car, the motor HAS NOT been replaced) So I did a little homework and found out that if there was a shortege of 2 bolt main blocks there would simpley borow a 4 bolt block. So if you plan on a rebuild soon you may get a very awesome suprise.

RE: 4 bolt main
The majority of LT1s were only 2 bolt mains, but there were 2 or 3 years that had alot of 4 bolts installed. This is something I read WAY back in the day on the forums. Search for it I'm sure its there somewhere.

RE: 4 bolt main
weird..... in one of the many ls1/lt1 threads someone was mentioning how strong the lt1 was because of its 4 bolt main. JD came in saying the ls1 had a 6 bolt main..... and then ive heard the argument that the 305 doesnt perform as well as the ford 302 because of the 305's 2bolt main, doesnt hold up to the power..... now im all confused

RE: 4 bolt main
Ok i just searched four bold main on the forums and found a thread, they were talking about how it is "technically" a 6 bolt main because it has 2 off center cap bolts or something like that. I'll find it again and post the link.
Ok found it

RE: 4 bolt main
The idea was that all Corvette LT1 would get 4 bolt mains, while the F cars with LT1s would get 2 bolt mains, except that a 4 bolt would be substituted for a 2 bolt in order to keep the production line going. All LT4 engines had 4 bolt mains.
The 305 does not perform well because it is a narrow bore long stroke engine and was not designed for high output. However; the Chevy 302, which was designed as alarge bore short stroke enginewill demolish a Ford 302. Two bolt mains are generally reliable to around 450 HP, and with a properly balanced engine can be good for another 100 HP.
LS type engines have a deep skirted block and use 4 bolts under the main bearing caps, and 2 bolts from the side of the block into the main bearing caps. So they have 6 bolt mains.
Now, all you guys pull down the oil pan and count the number of bolts. Bragging rights are important.
