For the body or the engine?
Have you got any experience painting a car? If not, then I'd sure hesitate to start with a car that's going to be your "keeper".
The paint on my car is base/clear, which is a two step system. It's the best way to get that high gloss you're looking for. It requires multiple coats of base to build it up, and then multiple coats of clear so you can have enough clear to not polish through it when you buff the clear out. That's another step that takes a lot of skill and care. It's very easy to buff through the clear and ruin your paint job if you've never done this.
You'll also need a good primer and an epoxy primer sealer to make sure it's going to have a good base for your paint.
This is 7/8 gallon of base and an equal amount of clear, plus two guys working all day to cut and buff it out.

Alot depends on what your state requires also, if you have to use waterborn or not, I usually shoot with PPG or Limcote they come out pretty nice, what ever you choose make sure you stay with the same line for all stages (sealer, primer, base and clear) it can lead to some big problems if you mix paint lines.

I'm NOT an expert, hell I'm not even a novice at laying paint. But I can do body work pretty well. Alot of years sanding and my dads polish shop I guess. I have been doing my homework in this area. And this is what I've come up with. Southern polyurathanes makes the some very good primers and clears on the market, and there prices are very low. When you call there you talk to the owner so cosumer support is outstanding. The guys I've been talking with stay clear of PPG due to price and the fact they had some bad product awhile ago. The problem for this guy, who owns a bodyshop and even sells a how to dvd (check out the garage section or this months Chevy Hiperformance) is he had a specific problem and PPG admited they had some bad product but would do nothing to replace the cost of the paint. OH SORRY. Is all he got. He and some others I've talked to recommend DuPont for base coat color. Like I said this is all here say but it is the road I'm going down. Good Luck.

If you've got a painter, then don't buy anything until you talk to him. He should be able to tell you what he needs, then you can buy it. I also have heard really good things about Southern when it comes to pricing and excellent service! I would seriously consider them if I wasn't already getting a good price on DuPont from my paint shop.
I've had DuPont sprayed on the last two I had shot, and loved the results.

LOL yeah, it's more f a graphite color. It's actually got black stripes too. But it does show the dust well. I don't regret it at all, as my car has a lot of metallic pearl in it and doesn't look black in person, like it does in pictures.
This pic was in the garage under the lights and shows the color a bit better:
