Oil Leak

Oil Leak
Ok, I dont know what this part is called, but between the oil pan and the tranny pan, theres a black pan with 4 bolts on it, it connects the tranny and engine together, its got a small leak which caused oil to go all down my floor board and what not. I want to do the oil tomarrow but not before changing out this gasket. Is this the rear main seal gasket? I thought these were hard to replace if so? This ones easy,

That's the dust/inspection cover for the torque converter, and it has no gasket since it wasn't designed to seal anything. If you have fluid leaking from there, it's either a rear main seal or a front trans seal. If you wipe your finger across a drop and look at it you'll see it's either red (trans fluid) or brown (engine oil).
Depending on how bad it is you need one of the two seals. Also check your pan bolts to be sure the oil pan isn't loose, but DON"T over tighten them.

In case you were wondering, all it is, is a cover to keep out road debris (dirt, rocks, road kill, etc.).

My truck has one, but I haven't had one on the Camaro since 1975, and the Austin I never put one on either. If I had a 4x4 I might worry about it, but not for a street car.

Well its definitely leaking from the rear main seal, oh well but its leaking pretty good. I think the car was down about a quart maybe quart and a quarter of oil. When I do heads and a cam on this car ill probably have to learn how to do this or be the assistant.

Pretty typical for a Chevy V8 to leak at the rear main seal. They all do it sooner or later. Some are impossible to get to without the engine out, and others with enough pan clearance are easy.
